INSPECTORS have praised the “warm and welcoming environment” of an after-school club at a Fishponds primary school.
Ofsted made its first ever visit to Oldbury Court Out of School Clubs’ Wraparound Care at Avanti Gardens School in the summer.
Inspector Ruth Glover said the club, which has 56 children aged from five to ten on its roll, meets its requirements, with “engaging activities” tailored to children’s interests and strong relationships between children and staff.
She said: “Children experience a warm and welcoming environment, where they feel safe, secure and valued.
“Children enjoy their time at the out-of-school club, engaging happily in play, chatting with friends, and participating in activities that make them feel valued and understood.
“The nurturing environment supports their personal development and fosters a love for learning and exploration.
“Staff interactions with children are consistently positive and supportive, fostering strong relationships.
“For example, during snack time, staff engage the children in meaningful conversations about their learning in school and the topics they are studying, showing genuine interest in their experiences.
“This helps to build a sense of belonging and community among the children.”
The inspector said hygiene practices around meal and snack times are “exemplary”, with established routines and rules that help make children more independent and responsible.
She said: “Children’s behaviour is good, reflecting the high expectations set by the staff. Staff use effective strategies to maintain rules and routines.
“The setting is adept at catering to individual needs, which is evident in staff’s personalised approach to activities. For example, children with specific sensory needs have the option to wear ear defenders during noisy times, ensuring they remain comfortable and engaged.”
The report said children’s “self-esteem and sense of autonomy” was boosted by staff encouraging them to choose from the “engaging and diverse” range of activities.
Parents praise for ‘dedication and professionalism’ of staff
The inspector said: “Parents express high levels of satisfaction with the setting, frequently praising the staff for their dedication and professionalism.”
She said the club’s leadership is “strong and supportive” and there is an open and positive culture around safeguarding children.
The inspector made no recommendations for improvement
Manager Kayleigh Malone said: “We are very happy that the Ofsted inspector acknowledged how staff prioritise creating a play environment that children feel safe and welcome in and have taken ownership of.
“Since opening at Avanti Gardens we have also built up a good working relationship with Avanti Gardens School and feel this contributes to the children’s well-being.”
