Disposable BBQs cause big park grass fire

DISPOSABLE barbecues caused a big grass fire at Stoke Park that destroyed wildlife habitats and conservation projects this afternoon.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service sent four crews from across the city to tackle the blaze on the slope overlooking the M32 between the Dower House and Lockleaze, underneath the Lady Elizabeth Somerset memorial.

It took them about three hours to make the area safe.

Afterwards the service said the fire started accidentally.

Avon and Somerset police said: “Fishponds neighbourhood team were called to Stoke Park earlier today after two disposable barbecues ignited patches of dry grass, quickly sparking a blaze that spread across the site.

“Firefighters worked to contain the flames while police attended the scene to assist with public safety.

Afterwards a representative of volunteer wildlife group Avon Reptile & Amphibian Group posted a statement on social media, which said: “The fire this afternoon in Stoke Park was an accident caused by disposable barbecues.

“The people responsible called the fire brigade and admitted their mistake to the police.

“Avon Fire & Rescue Service did a fantastic job stopping the blaze from spreading and putting the fires out.

“They allowed us to check for any reptile casualties as soon as it was safe to do so & thankfully we didn’t see any.

“A reminder not to use disposable barbecues.”
