A FISHPONDS man has become the fifth person charged with murder following a knife attack last week.
Yahaye Ali, aged 20, is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today accused of murdering 47-year-old Leon Phillips and possessing a bladed article.
Mr Phillips was attacked in Stapleton Road, St Jude’s, at about 10.45pm on February 2. He died of his injuries in hospital the following morning.
Four other men – Mustafa Ali, 18, of Fishponds, Ayoob Mohamed, 18, of St Paul’s, Muner Teclu, 20, of Easton, and 19-year-old Fallou Diop, of no fixed address – have already been charged and appeared in court. They have been remanded in custody.
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Nadine Partridge said: “Specialist officers continue to support and update Leon’s family, who are devastated by the events of the past week.
“A large number of enquiries have been completed by the investigative team since Leon’s death, and have resulted in the Crown Prosecution Service authorising murder charges against five men.
“While there is not considered to be a wider risk to the public, uniformed officers continue to carry out high-visibility patrols.
“Plans are also in place for the mobile police station to remain in the area too, so anyone with concerns can speak to us.”
Anyone with information about the incident, CCTV or dashcam footage taken in the area between 10.30pm and 11pm should call on 101 and quote the crime reference number 5226 030 731.
