A MAN has appeared in court charged with murder in connection with the death of a woman following an incident in Downend.
Geoffrey Billett, aged 68, of Overnhill Road, appeared at Bristol Magistrates Court today accused of the murder of Jill Billett.
He also faces a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog.
Police said that emergency services were called to an address in Overnhill Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.
They found 69-year-old Mrs Billett had ben injured an she was taken to hospital but died a few hours later.
Geoffrey Billett was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, and later charged.
He was remanded in custody today, ahead of an appearance at Bristol Crown Court.
A police spokesperson said: “Mrs Billett’s family have been updated and they continue to be supported by specially-trained officers. Our thoughts are with the family, who understandably have asked for people to respect their privacy.
“We would remind people that due to ongoing court proceedings no material, commentary or information should be published that would prevent a fair trial taking place.
Superintendent Karen Corrigan said: “We know this news will cause great shock in the local community, but we would like to reassure everyone that we do not consider there to be any ongoing risk to the public.
“People can though expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days, both to provide reassurance and to carry out important and necessary enquiries as part of this murder investigation.
“If anyone has concerns then please speak to those officers in the area and they will be happy to talk to you and help.
“Similarly, we would ask anyone with information that may be able to assist our investigation to please come forward.”
