Last high street bank in Fishponds to close

FISHPONDS is set to lose its last high street bank when Lloyds closes its branch in the summer.

The branch in Fishponds Road is the last of the ‘Big Four’ major UK banks left in the busy shopping street, after NatWest closed last September.

Barclays closed its branch on Fishponds Road in 2020 and HSBC left in 2015.

A Lloyds spokesperson told the Voice the Fishponds bank will close on June 6, although the bank’s website says the closing date is July 1.

The bank did respond to a question about the number of staff working at the branch and what would happen to them after it shuts.

The spokesperson said: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before.

“In addition to our app, customers can use the local Post Office or walk into any Lloyds or Halifax branch to manage their money and can also deposit cash at PayPoint locations.

1,335 regular customers

“We’re giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us.”

Lloyds published usage data on its website that says 1,335 customers use the bank on a regular, monthly basis.

It says 79% of customers used another branch, phone or banking services over a six-month period last year, with 31% also using the post office for banking.

The bank is recommending regular customers use its Kingswood branch, which is two and a half miles away – about 10 minutes by car or a 40-minute walk.

The bank’s statement says: “Before we close any branch, we look at how customers are doing their banking. Most customers prefer to use our mobile app, online banking or call us.

“Because of this, we’ll be closing our Bristol Fishponds branch.”
